How to perform

Yoke Walk movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Step under the crossbar of a loaded yoke, rack it across the upper back like a back squat and grip the bar or the uprights.

  1. 1

Brace hard, look forward and drive through the heels to lift the yoke off the floor or pins.

  2. 2

Start walking with short, quick steps, keeping the torso upright.

  3. 3

Hold the uprights to stop the yoke swinging and keep the pace steady.

  4. 4

Walk the target distance, then stop and lower the yoke with a controlled squat.

Breathing: Take short breaths behind a braced trunk; don't hold one breath for the whole walk.

Coaching tips

  • Brace like a squat

  • Short, fast steps

  • Stay tall, eyes up

Common mistakes

  • Long strides that make the yoke sway

  • Leaning forward and folding at the hips

  • Racking the bar too high on the neck

  • Starting to walk before the brace is set

Safety notes

  • Start light to learn how the yoke swings, and keep the walking lane clear.

  • If the yoke starts to tip, stop and set it down rather than chasing it.
