    Keep the upper arms still.

  2. 2

Bend the elbows outward to lower the inner ends of the dumbbells toward the chest.

  3. 3

Lightly touch the chest with the dumbbells.

  4. 4

Extend the elbows to return to the start.

Breathing: Inhale as you lower, exhale as you extend.

Coaching tips

  • Elbows out, upper arms still

  • Touch lightly

  • Squeeze at the top

Common mistakes

  • Turning it into a press

  • Dropping the dumbbells onto the chest

  • Using too much weight

Safety notes

  • Use light to moderate dumbbells; this elbow-out position can irritate the elbows under heavy load.
