How to perform
Main muscles working (thicker lines)
Starting position
Stand at the base of a moderate hill in an athletic split stance after a thorough warm-up.
Lean forward from the ankles and drive off the front foot.
Pump your arms powerfully and drive your knees forward and up.
Sprint hard up the hill for the set distance or time, typically 8-20 seconds.
Walk back down slowly to recover fully before the next rep.
Breathing: Breathe forcefully and rhythmically during the sprint and deeply during the walk-down recovery.
Coaching tips
Drive the knees
Push the ground back
Punch the arms
Common mistakes
Shortening recovery so quality drops
Bending at the waist instead of leaning from the ankles
Choosing a hill that is too steep
Safety notes
Warm up thoroughly before sprinting.
Walk down rather than run to limit knee and hamstring stress.
