Kettlebell Split Jerk

A single kettlebell driven off the rack with a dip and drive, then caught overhead as you drop into a split stance. The split gives a lower, more stable catch than the squat-style kettlebell jerk.

How to perform

Kettlebell Split Jerk movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand with feet hip-width and one kettlebell in the rack, forearm vertical and elbow against the ribs.

  1. 1

Dip a few inches by bending the knees with the torso upright.

  2. 2

Drive up explosively through the legs to launch the bell.

  3. 3

Split your feet, one forward and one back, dropping under the bell as you lock the arm out.

  4. 4

Recover by stepping the front foot back, then the back foot forward, keeping the bell overhead.

  5. 5

Lower the bell to the rack and repeat; switch arms after the set.

Breathing: Brace through the dip and drive, and exhale as you recover from the split.

Coaching tips

  • Drive, then split

  • Punch and lock

  • Front foot, then back foot

Common mistakes

  • Feet landing in a straight line

  • Pressing the bell out instead of dropping under it

  • Front knee collapsing inward

Safety notes

  • Practise the footwork without a bell first.

  • Keep the landing area clear.
