Starting position
Stand beside a hanging heavy bag in a wide, staggered stance with your near hand on the bag at chest height.
Load your hips and rear leg, turning slightly away from the bag.
Twist through the hips and trunk and push the bag away as hard and fast as you can.
Let the arm extend fully as the bag swings off.
Receive the bag with a soft arm as it swings back, reversing the motion, and repeat.
Breathing: Exhale sharply on each thrust, inhale as you receive the bag.
Coaching tips
Hips turn first
Push through the bag
Soft catch
Common mistakes
Pushing with the arm only and no hip turn
Meeting the returning bag with a locked elbow
Standing too upright and narrow to absorb the bag
Safety notes
Check the bag's mount before use and stay clear of its swing path.
Absorb the returning bag with bent elbows to protect the shoulder.
