Kettlebell Thruster movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand with feet shoulder-width holding one or two kettlebells in the rack position, elbows tucked.

  1. 1

Brace and squat down, keeping the chest up and elbows in.

  2. 2

Drive up out of the squat powerfully.

  3. 3

Use the momentum to press the bells overhead to lockout.

  4. 4

Lower the bells back to the rack as you begin the next squat.

Breathing: Inhale on the way down and exhale forcefully as you press overhead.

Coaching tips

  • Legs drive the press

  • Elbows tight in the squat

  • One smooth motion

Common mistakes

  • Pressing before standing up

  • Chest dropping in the squat

  • Bells drifting away from the body

  • Overarching at lockout

Safety notes

  • Keep the rack position tight so the bells do not pull you forward.

  • Reduce load if the overhead lockout is not stable.
